Lonely Planet The best weekend breaks from London by train

If you’re looking for a hassle-free weekend getaway from London, take the train to one of these stunning spots, you won’t even need to use a day of leave! From wild swimming in Cambridge to boutique B&B’s in Broadstairs; eating a 15-mile menu in the New Forest to head banging in Cardiff, the diversity of mini-breaks from London by train means there’s something for everyone.

Do: Lace up your hiking boots on the quick, picturesque train journey into this otherworldly landscape. If you’re visiting in autumn you’ll be greeted by roaming pigs, released to hoover up the fallen acorns and fatten up, as well as cows and the eponymous ponies. The sprawling New Forest is pretty flat with a network of smooth roads throughout, so take to two wheels to explore or, better still, book a horseback tour and see the forest from the perspective of its most famous residents.

Eat: The 15-mile lunch menu at Burley Manor. The locally sourced ingredients could not be fresher and the restaurant’s beautiful views make for a perfect pit stop in a day packed with outdoor activities.

Stay: In the middle of the New Forest, overlooking a neighbouring deer sanctuary, adults-only Burley Manor boasts a heated outdoor pool, an on-site spa and individually decorated bedrooms.
