Summer event afternoon tea & gin tasting

We kicked-off July with a rather tasty afternoon with two of our favourite things; afternoon tea and gin!

Our guests were welcomed into the bar for a pre-event tipple before joining us in our drawing room. NAME welcomed everyone to the event and gave a little talk about the history of gin including the origin of the famous saying ‘Dutch courage’ – “Gin in its modern form was reputably invented by the Dutch physician Franz de le Boë in the 17th century. British troops fighting Louis XIV alongside their allies in the Low Countries appreciated the calming effects of Jenever (Dutch gin) before heading into battle and there was born the phrase ‘Dutch courage’!”

During the talk Conker gin from our local Dorset distillery was served with Fever Trees premium Indian tonic water. This tonic is made by blending botanical oils with spring water and the highest quality quinine from the ‘fever trees’ of the Eastern Congo. It’s a delicious, natural and award-winning tonic with a uniquely clean and refreshing taste and aroma. Designed to enhance the very best gins. Conker gin is a classic gin, led by dry Macedonian juniper heart, the subtle incorporation of the Dorset notes of elderberries, samphire and handpicked New Forest gorse flowers brings bright, refreshing and light notes – Poured and adored over ice!

Delicate finger sandwiches, hand-crafted cakes and home-baked scones were delivered to the tables – Time for afternoon tea and treats! As the guests delved into their scrumptious treats created by our chefs the next gin was served, Lymington gin – Another local favourite! On tasting it is lovely and smooth with citrus notes and a slight sweetness from the almonds. Served with pink peppercorns, zest of lime and Fever Trees elderflower tonic water offering a light and subtle character with sweet and delicate flavours. Providing a summery twist to the classic gin and tonic – Mmm, refreshing!

To finish of the afternoon we went for something a little more from our roots and inspiration. Pothecary gin is pleasantly soft, with a little oiliness and the aromatic notes of lavender and citrus. A very sippable texture and a bold yet balanced flavour profile, and a lovely lingering finish. To pair we chose Fever Trees Mediterranean tonic water. Crafted from blending essential oils from the flowers, fruits and herbs that Fever Tree have gathered from around the Mediterranean shores with the highest quality quinine. Its aromas are floral, delicate and unique giving the drink an overall smooth texture. Finished off with a peeling of orange – Chin chin!
